Creating Railway Model Scenery – 13 Simple Household Products That Work Wonders

I hear this all the time from newbie model railroaders “railway model scenery’s are expensive to create”. Yes, this can be true, if you buy all of Your Model railway scenery supplies from hobby stores. But, many scenery model railway products can be found right in your own household. You should always think twice before throwing anything away. What looks like “junk” might be a great addition to your model railways scenery.

The following 13 household items are excellent “fillers”. Fillers are used to fill in baron spots in your model railway’s scenery areas.

1. Talcum or Baby Powder is fantastic for creating snow capped mountains or a snow covered farmers’ field.

2. Smaller rocks in various sizes can create the look of large and small boulders. To make the boulders look far away you need to use the “forced perspective” technique. To do this, put the bigger rocks up front and the smaller slightly darker ones farther back, this creates the illusion that the farther back boulders are a long ways off. Also, it’s best NOT to clean the rocks, as this will kill the age look that you will want.

3. Next time you saw wood, collect the sawdust, add and mix in the right fabric dye color and presto you now have dirt and/or grass.

4. Ground up pecan and peanut shells can also work great for creating dirt. You can vary the look of the textures’ dirt with the grinding. The more you grind the shells the finer and smoother the dirt will be.

5. Different colored tea leaves when spread on the ground, gives the illusion of falls fallen tree leaves (this works great)!

6. Smaller pebbles, shrubbery and twigs in your yard can be used for landscaping.

7. Toothpicks are great for building fence posts and rails. Round toothpicks stacked on top of each other will look like firewood.

8. Match sticks (without the match head) are excellent for creating sign posts.

9. Bamboo skewers when used right can make very realistic telephone poles.

10. Black thread can be turned into telephone lines.

11. Aluminum foil is one of the most commonly used household items by railroad modelers. It can be molded into any shape you want and it looks like metal. It’s also great for stopping light from going though areas like walls in a room.

12. Metal combs will create a wood grain effect on soft plastic and wood.

13. Used house paint is excellent for painting things like fence posts.

 A World Safe for Capitalism

A World Safe for Capitalism

$27.97

A World Safe for Capitalism unravels a little-known incident: a Wall Street corporation”s takeover of the foreign debt, national railroad, and national bank of the Dominican Republic in the 1890s. Working with the republic”s tyrannical president, the American firm tried to turn self-sufficient peasants into cash-crop farmers, with disastrous results. By 1904, the company”s narrow pursuit of profit clashed with Theodore Roosevelt”s goal of making the United States a great power, thus triggering a sweeping new policy-the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine. Praised by Diplomatic History as a model of globe-trotting multiarchival research, this exciting history covers events in New York, Washington, Santo Domingo, Brussels, and London.

Age of Delirium: The Decline and Fall of the Soviet Union

Age of Delirium: The Decline and Fall of the Soviet Union

$45.65

Feared and respected as one of the world’s two great superpowers, the Soviet Union throughout the final twenty years of its life was a model of state-organized delusion. As David Satter shows in powerful detail, the leaders of the Kremlin found that when their carefully constricted facade fell apart in the late 1980s, there was nothing to prop up the crumbling ruins. Satter’s book demonstrates compellingly how the Soviet people were forced to live a gigantic lie. During nearly two decades of reporting for the Financial Times and Reader’s Digest, he interviewed Soviet citizens all across the vast country, not just the dissidents and party apparatchiks in Moscow but ordinary men and women. Traveling with him from coal mines and farms to bureaucratic reception halls to the nightmarish wards of punitive psychiatric hospitals to railroad stations where victims of the Communist system set up camp, the reader witnesses how an entire state was constituted on the basis of a fraudulent version of reality. In the Soviet Union, lying – at the grocery and the factory as well as the government office – was universal and obligatory, and Westerners were seldom able to penetrate the perplexing mosaic of wishful thinking and denial that camouflaged a brutal regime.

 Invisible Giants

Invisible Giants

$49.95

Invisible Giants is the Horatio Alger-esque tale of a pair of reclusive Cleveland brothers, Oris Paxton and Mantis James Van Sweringen, who rose from poverty to become two of the most powerful men in America. They controlled the country’s largest railroad system — a network of track reaching from the Atlantic to Salt Lake City and from Ontario to the Gulf of Mexico. On the eve of the Great Depression they were close to controlling the country’s first coast-to-coast rail system — a goal that still eludes us. They created the model upper-class suburb of Shaker Heights, Ohio, with its unique rapid transit access. They built Cleveland’s landmark Terminal Tower and its innovative city within a city complex. Indisputably, they created modern Cleveland.Yet beyond a small, closely knit circle, the bachelor Van Sweringen brothers were enigmas. Their actions were aggressive, creative, and bold, but their manner was modest, mild, and retiring. Dismissed by many as mere shoe-string financial manipulators, they created enduring works, which remain strong today. The Van Sweringen story begins in early-20th-century Cleveland suburban real estate and reaches its zenith in the heady late 1920s, amid the turmoil of national transportation power politics and unprecedented empire-building. As the Great Depression destroyed many of their fellow financiers, the Vans survived through imaginative stubbornness — until tragedy ended their careers almost simultaneously. Invisible Giants is the first comprehensive biography of these two remarkable if mysterious men.

Louisiana and Arkansas Railway: The Story of a Regional Line

Louisiana and Arkansas Railway: The Story of a Regional Line

$36.94

The Louisiana & Arkansas Railway, known as The Better Way , ran its first trains at the turn of the century and expanded over the years to connect New Orleans to Dallas. Well-maintained and enduringly profitable, this regional railroad succeeded because of the tenacity of three men who consecutively oversaw all aspects of operations. The story of L&A is largely a collective biography of William Edenborn, William Buchanan, and Harvey Couch – the men who built and extended the line by shrewd acquisitions. These successful businessmen combined wisdom, foresight, and propensity for hard work – traits they had first demonstrated in other careers – with their longtime love for trains. Each applied remarkable talents for industry and commerce toward the development of L&A to mold it into a model regional railroad. In this first history of the L&A, Fair traces the line’s development from the early boom days of railroading to its dissolution in the modern era of takeovers. Although for much of its existence the L&A operated under the control of a parent company, the KCS, it long maintained independence. The eventual takeover by the superline in 1992 finally dissolved the L&A entirely.

Major General Isaac Ridgeway Trimble: Biography of a Baltimore Confederate

Major General Isaac Ridgeway Trimble: Biography of a Baltimore Confederate

$65.23

Major General Isaac Ridgeway Trimble, one of the oldest and more eccentric officers involved in the Civil War, made himself a favorite of Stonewall Jackson through his courage and stubborn energy. Born to a Quaker family, Trimble spent his childhood on the American frontier. After graduating from West Point, he served in the Old Army and then involved himself with the growing railroad industry of the 1830s, living at the forefront of American modernization. As the war began, he sided with the South, burning railroad bridges north of Baltimore to deny Washington the support of Union troops, and then moving to Virginia. He enlisted in the Engineers and constructed battery emplacements. Commissioned brigadier general in late 1861, Trimble distinguished himself at Cross Keys, Gaines’s Mill, Manassas, and Gettysburg; was involved in the Baltimore riots; and spent time as a prisoner on Johnson’s Island. This biography covers Trimble’s personal life and career with both the railroad and the military. Simultaneously, it serves as a case study of an American who chose to side with the South. Before the war, Trimble traveled freely between states and showed no early indication of a regional attachment. The work uses Abraham Maslow’s motivation model, the hierarchy of needs, to reconcile Trimble’s self-interest with his need to belong to a community. It also raises various questions related to Southern history, including community identity, modernization, and the concept of the ?New South.?
